MELBOURNE, Australia - Lewis Hamilton was the best lap on the Albert Park circuit that allowed him to equal Ayrton Senna's six-headed record at the Australian Grand Prix. faster.

The lap times continued to improve compared to the three free practice sessions and Hamilton clocked his fastest time in qualifying in one minute 22.188 seconds. This led to his 62nd place in F1, beaten only by Michael Schumahcer (68) and Senna (65), and lowered the record set by Vettel in the third session.
Hamilton drove more than a second below last year's leading position, but "we thought it would be more than that."
"Maybe it's the track. It's cooler today. I'm sure that during the season it will be much faster. "
Vettel, a four-time world champion, admitted that Hamilton's qualifying lap was out of his reach, but he was anxious to drive the new cars faster in race conditions.
"Everyone is excited," Vettel said. We are motivated for tomorrow.
"We have a good car and we work well as a team. It's nice to see that things work. "
Earlier tests showed that this year's heavier and more aerodynamic cars were negotiating faster turns and were faster than in 2016. Hamilton noted that it was now up to pilots to show the impact of these changes.
"Our job is to push the car to the limit," he said.
While knowing that it can be faster, Hamilton was pleased with his position for Sunday's race and aware that Ferrari could be a bigger challenge than last year.
"We are in an excellent position for tomorrow. Now we have to make sure we do our homework and have an answer for these guys (Ferrari). "
Hamilton took the lead from last year but was second only to the finish line behind his teammate Nico Rosberg. The latter also advanced to Hamilton to win the drivers' championship and he then announced his retirement, opening the door to Bottas coming from Williams.
The 80,000 spectators experienced a great disappointment in the last phase of qualifying when local favorite Daniel Ricciardo lost control of his Red Bull and stopped in the gravel bin at turn 14. He returned to the pits at foot.
"I'm doing well physically, but emotionally it's hard to take," said Ricciardo, who finished third in the drivers' ranking last year.
Ricciardo slipped to 10th on the grid, but his teammate at Red Bull Max Verstappen qualified fifth.
Roman Grosjean (Haas) is sixth, ahead of Felipe Massa (Williams) and Toro Rosso drivers Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kvyat.
